Lake Grau­rei­hersee

Lake Grau­rei­hersee was cre­ated on the site of the for­mer open-cast mine Wer­ming­hoff I, very close to Knap­pen­rode Energy Fac­tory. The old presses, dry­ers and sieves are switched on three times a day. You can expe­ri­ence this ‘shift change’ on a fac­tory dis­cov­ery tour.

The lake takes its name from the hun­dreds of breed­ing pairs of one of Ger­many’s largest colony of grey herons (Grau­rei­her), which existed here ten years ago.
