Lake Knap­pensee

Lake Knap­pensee is one of the old­est man-made lakes in the Lusa­t­ian Lake­land. Its cre­ation com­menced in 1945 with the uncon­trolled flood­ing of the Wer­ming­hoff I open-cast mine. Swim­mers, water sports enthu­si­asts and long-stay campers have been com­ing to Lake Knap­pensee since the 1960s. Sur­rounded by exten­sive wood­land and heaths, the lake quickly became a pop­u­lar place of recre­ation, fondly referred to as the ‘lit­tle Baltic Sea’. Since 2014, Lake Knap­pensee has been closed off for min­ing recla­ma­tion work. The goal is to see non-motorised boats, swim­mers and sun­bathers return to the lake and its beaches once it is reopened for pub­lic use. Tourism facil­i­ties and accom­mo­da­tion in the area will be restruc­tured based on new plans.

The 8-kilo­me­tre-long lake cir­cuit is cur­rently unus­able due to the des­ig­na­tion of geot­ech­ni­cal restricted areas.
